Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. It is a leading cause of tooth loss in Canadian adults. Good oral hygiene and regular dental examinations are essential in prevention and early detection of gum disease.
Gingivitis (gums disease) and periodontitis (gums and bone disease) are the two main forms of periodontal disease (also called pyorrhea).
Prevention and treatment of periodontal disease most often includes regular removal of plaque and calculus (tartar) by a dentist or dental hygienist. This dental cleaning usually includes scaling and root planning. Depending how far the disease has progressed, medications may be used in conjunction with dental cleanings. Surgical treatments may also be considered in specific situations.
